Indianapolis, November 15, 2008
-- Four members of Star United were recognized for their
contributions to the 2008 season at a season-ending banquet held in
Indianapolis on Saturday, November 15, 2008.
Rookie of the Year honors were
awarded to Frank Cardenas, trumpeter. Frank's enthusiasm was found
to be contagious by his fellow members, making the season memorable
for everyone involved in the organization.
Longtime conductor and staff member
Becky Saddlemire received Member of the Year honors for her
dedication to the organization. Becky is an inaugural member of the
Star of Indiana organization and has been involved with every
incarnation of the organization since the fall of 1984. Her
dedication and preparation during the 2008 season was unmatched. She
also had the distinction of canceling a meeting with the Lieutenant
Governor of Indiana because it conflicted with a Star United
rehearsal!
Two memorial awards celebrating the
contributions of influential Star of Indiana performers were
also presented at the event. Josh Talbott received the first ever
Jonathan Miller Award for Distinguished Service for his
dedication to the organization. Josh prepared an original score and
an arrangement for the 2008 season and was instrumental in getting
the unit prepared properly for its season. Learn more about Jonathan

Mark Schliehs, percussionist, received
the first ever Brad Stansberry Award for Distinguished Service.
Sean Conley, President of Star United, stated the purpose of
the award as being to recognize the member "who best epitomizes the
Star "espirit de corps" through his spirit, enthusiasm, and work
ethic." Mark is an inaugural member of Star of Indiana, aging
out in the corps' first season. He fulfilled important staff roles
with the competing corps and has demonstrated unceasing commitment
to the Star United organization. Brad Stansberry's sister Jen
also attended the event.
Congratulations to all Star United
members for their contributions to the 2008 season. |
