Waukegan, Illinois -- The Star
United Mini Corps will debut their 2009 program on Sunday, June
14th in a combined concert with the Illinois Brass Band.
The Drum Corps Associate (DCA)
Three-time Champion Star United Mini Corps will perform an
original work by Frank Sullivan entitled "Deja View" (in four
movements).
“This program is an ambitious
undertaking for our ensemble,” admits Sean Conley, Star United
Corps Director and a mellophonist with the ensemble. “It relies
heavily on an expanded percussion section,” says Conley who adds
that each brass player will also perform with a percussion
instrument at some point in the program.
In addition to a Star United performance, the event in
Waukegan will include a concert by the Illinois Brass Band and an
encore featuring two pieces performed by the combined groups. "We
jumped at the opportunity to share the stage with such an esteemed
group," says Conley. "We look forward to enjoying the band's
performance and learning all they have to offer about great brass
playing."
Formed in 2006, Star United is a
twenty-member performance ensemble comprised of brass and percussion
performers that was formed to compete in the individual and ensemble
portion of the Drum Corps Associates (DCA) national championship.
The unit has placed first in the mini corps division each year it
has competed at the event.
“We have been amazed at the reception we
received at the championships,” says Conley. “The opportunity has
afforded our members to make many new friends, work hard together to
prepare the programs, and become immersed in the drum corps
environment again.”
Star United will return to Rochester, New York during Labor
Day weekend to compete at the DCA Championships.
