 Indianapolis,
February 3, 2012
– A 44 mile trip could be described as a really long
commute or a day trip out of town. For Star United alumi
Ed Cooning IV, a 44 miler is a one-day ultra marathon that
is being undertaken to support a worthy cause.
Ed's "I Heart Indy" run
began this morning at the Monument Circle in downtown
Indianapolis. Ed's goal is to highlight
National Wear Red Day as part of American Hearth
Month. During the month of February, the American
Heart Association promotes the importance of preventing
heart disease, the number one killer of men and women in the
United States.
Ed's motivation for this undertaking was chronicled in the
Indianapolis Star on February 2 (click
here for article):
Cooning is motivated by personal experiences of family
and friends who have suffered and died from heart-related
conditions, including a friend, Jonathan Miller, whom he met
when they were both in the Star of Indiana drum and bugle
corps in the early 1990s.
In fact, he started running after Miller died in 2005 very
suddenly of aortic dissection at age 33, probably related to
his Marfan Syndrome, an unusual genetic disorder of the
connective tissue. Miller and his wife were planning to run
the 2006 Mini, so Cooning and a group of his friends trained
and ran it that year in remembrance of him.
They formed a team, called
Jonnie’s Goodguys, which has grown to more than 30
members who usually run the Mini, the Indianapolis Marathon
at Fort Harrison and other smaller races.
Since 2008, they’ve been raising money for charities,
including the National Marfan Foundation and other causes
that don’t necessarily get a lot of attention. The group has
even started the process to become a non-profit charitable
organization.
Congratulations
to Ed for this extraordinary accomplishment!

importance of heart disease prevention. |

About Star United
Indianapolis-based Star United is a brass and
percussion performance ensemble composed primarily of
alums of the Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps,
Brass Theater, and Blast!.
Formed in 2006, Star United competes with other
"mini corps" ensembles located throughout North America
at the Drum Corps Associates' (DCA) national
championships each Labor Day Weekend in Rochester, New
York. To date, Star United has been named the
national championship corps in each of its five years of
existence. The corps will attempt to defend its title
again on September 2, 2011.
Star United would not exist without the support
of its coaching team, Bill Cook, Cook Group, and
sponsors such as Vic Firth, Chops Percussion, Evans Drum
Heads, Pearl Drums, and ChopsSaver.
Star United is also particularly grateful to its
fellow Star of Indiana alums for all of the support the
organization has provided the mini corps. The Madison
Scouts, Carmel
High School (Carmel, Indiana) and
Victor High
School (Victor, New York)
also deserve special recognition for their willingness
to share resources to assist the corps in preparing and
performing.
