United Adds McCoy and Meyer to Staff |

– Star United Mini Corps is proud to announce the
addition of Scott McCoy and Brad Meyer to its percussion
coaching and music writing staff for the 2011 season.
“Scott was
an important part of our corps’ success in 2010 as a
performer, and we are proud to include him as both a
performer and instructor this season,” says Sean Conley,
Director of Star United. “We’re also thankful for
Brad Meyer and the professionalism and vast background in
percussive arts that he brings to our organization.”
Scott McCoy
Scott
McCoy studying percussion at the age of nine from
Chicago-area professional Tom Tedrahn. He attended
Lake Park High School
in Roselle, IL
and participated in the nationally renowned Lancer Marching
Band as well as the jazz band, wind ensemble and pit
orchestra. During this time Scott also studied under Kevin
Lepper, Michael Chiodo, Jeff Hoke and Kenneth Snoeck.
After high
school McCoy attended the
University of
Kentucky as a Percussion
Performance major under the tutelage of Prof. Jim Campbell.
While at college Scott played in the percussion ensemble,
steel band, marching band, indoor drum line and wind
ensemble. As a member of the UK Indoor Drum Line in 1993, he
helped the group earn 2nd place at the Percussive Arts
Society International Convention (PASIC) Indoor Drum Line
competition and achieve 1st place at the Bands of America
(BOA) College Indoor Drum Line competition.
McCoy’s
drum corps experience dates back to 1986 when he marched in
the Guardsmen Cadets Drum & Bugle Corps from
Schaumburg, IL for two years. After graduating from high
school he marched snare drum for four years in the
Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps from
Rosemont,
IL. During his time in the
Cavaliers, he placed 2nd in the 1994 Drum Corps
International (DCI) Snare Individuals competition and won
the Drum Corps Midwest (DCM) Snare Individual title in 1995.
Also in 1995, McCoy helped the Cavaliers capture the DCI
World Championship title as well as the High Percussion
trophy. As a member of the Cavaliers Scott was
fortunate enough to be taught by Bret Kuhn, Jim Campbell,
Brian Mason, Leif Marwede, Dave Dombeck, Brad Halls, Scott
Kretzer, Pat McGowan and Mark Casey. In 2008 Scott was snare
drum section leader and drum sergeant for the Cavaliers
Anniversary Corps.
In 2006
McCoy started his "all-age" drum corps career with the
Music City Legend Drum & Bugle Corps from
Nashville, TN where he marched snare drum for two years
before joining the corps' staff as instructor and arranger.
During Scott’s first year with "Legend" he won the 2006 Drum
Corps Associates (DCA) Snare Drum Individual title, winning
it again in 2008 and
2010.
McCoy’s
teaching experience includes Lake Park High School (IL),
Lafayette High School (KY), Franklin County High School
(KY), Scott County High School (KY), the Blue Stars Drum &
Bugle Corps (WI) and served as a percussion arranger for the
2007 Austin Stars Drum & Bugle Corps (TX)
McCoy
endorses Pearl Drums, Adams Musical Instruments, Evans
Drumheads, Innovative Percussion sticks and mallets and
lives in Frankfort,
KY where he enjoys his career as a
systems engineer.
Brad Meyer
 Brad
Meyer is a percussion artist and composer with an extensive
and diverse teaching background. Meyer often tours to
universities and high schools throughout the Southern and
Midwestern states presenting recitals and workshops on
topics such as electro-acoustic percussion, contemporary
marimba, marching percussion, and world music. Meyer was the
pit manager for the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps
in 2010; he was also the front ensemble caption head of the
Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps in 2009, where he
worked as a technician for two years prior.
Currently,
Meyer is pursuing his Doctorate of Music in Percussion
Performance and Pedagogy of Music Theory certificate under
James Campbell at the University of Kentucky, where he also graduated Summa
Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance in
2006.
Along with
his studies at
UK, Brad is the Wildcat Marching
Band’s percussion director and the UK Steel Band/Blue Steel
coordinator. He received his Master of Music Performance
Degree under the direction of Dr. Scott Herring at the University of South Carolina,
where he ran the Palmetto Pans, the USC drumline, and
debuted his first percussion ensemble composition, Your
Three Favorite Colors.
From
2002-2005, Meyer was a part of The Cadets Drum and Bugle
Corps’ front ensemble, where he accumulated one world
championship, three “high-drum” trophies, and three
“outstanding service” awards. Brad is a proud endorsee of
Vic Firth Stick and Mallets, Evans Drumheads, and Tycoon
Percussion.
About Star United
Indianapolis-based Star United is a brass and
percussion performance ensemble composed primarily of
alums of the Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps,
Brass Theater, and Blast!.
Formed in 2006, Star United competes with other
"mini corps" ensembles located throughout North America
at the Drum Corps Associates' (DCA) national
championships each Labor Day Weekend in Rochester, New
York. To date, Star United has been named the
national championship corps in each of its five years of
existence. The corps will attempt to defend its title
again on September 2, 2011.
Star United would not exist without the support
of its coaching team, Bill Cook, Cook Group, and
sponsors such as Vic Firth, Chops Percussion, Evans Drum
Heads, Pearl Drums, and ChopsSaver.
Star United is also particularly grateful to its
fellow Star of Indiana alums for all of the support the
organization has provided the mini corps. The Madison
Scouts, Carmel
High School (Carmel, Indiana) and
Victor High
School (Victor, New York)
also deserve special recognition for their willingness
to share resources to assist the corps in preparing and
performing.
